Southern Decadence hasn't had the greatest luck with the weather the last few years. More trouble this year as New Orleans is being pounded by Lee. Tropical Storm Lee, that is.
I used to go to Southern Decadence every year. They always had good weather, but that ended in 2005 with Hurricane Katrina. I remember the storm blew through the weekend before Decadence. When I saw the pictures of the hotel windows blown out, I suspected Decadence would not happen. And that was before the levees broke.
The last time I was at Decadence was 2006. Shortly after I moved to San Francisco, and haven't been back since. But I've lived it vicariously through friends who went.
The problem is, they've had problems with the weather almost every year. Last year some friends went, and there was a hurricane threatening, but it looked like it would miss New Orleans. They arrived at their hotel around 11PM, and literally 15 minutes after settling into their room, the phone rang and they were informed the hotel would be evacuated at 8AM the next morning. This year they went to Hawaii instead.
I was kinda sorta thinking about taking some vacation time and maybe hitting up Southern Decadence this year. But that idea was quashed when I came down with the shingles.
All in all, it's probably a good thing I didn't go.
