Mitt Romney attacked President Obama's stand on abortion rights today, while speaking at a weekend retreat for repuglican lawmakers. In his speech, Romney accused President Obama of "answering to the most extreme wing of the abortion lobby."

No you fucking mormon hypocrite. He's not answering to anyone. He believes in a woman's right to choose. He's not changing his views from one day to the next. Not like some people I know.

Wasn't it a certain Mitt Romney, who, while running for governor of Massachusetts, painted himself as "Mr. Pro Choice?" And didn't that certain Mitt Romney's position change to anti-abortion when he had to face the lunatic fringe repuglicans who vote in the primaries???

There's an article in the Chronicle today about a push at City Hall to close down massage parlors where sex is sold. I am stunned that such places exist in our fair city. I've driven by those strip clubs on Broadway, so I know they exist. But the thought of a man seeking out a woman for sex, and paying for it, in San Francisco is such an alien concept that I can't wrap my head around it.

I hope you got a chance to see Prayers For Bobby on Lifetime this weekend. Quite honestly, I was expecting the typical Lifetime fare: a woman struggles through some life changing crisis, and emerges stronger on the other end. In fact, it is that, and so much more.

The message of Prayers For Bobby is clear and damning. When you repeat the refrain of constant hatred from the homophobes, you are sending a message that we're dirty, evil, sub-human, not worthy of your compassion.

While I was fortunate to be accepted immediately by my family when I came out, I know that there are millions of young gays and lesbians out there that are struggling with this very issue.

These kinds of hateful statements are echoed in public by the haters all the time, without the slightest bit of discomfort. And what I love best is how they always preface their remarks with something like "I"m not against gay people." Well, when you're calling us pedophiles, disease ridden, depressed, sinners, who are somewhat less sinful than those who practice bestiality, that doesn't sound very compassionate and loving to me.

To me, the most compelling and tearful moment of the movie was when the mother realized the part she played in her son's death (seen in the video above). She didn't pull the trigger, but she certainly handed him the gun.

Way To Go Sweden.....

Sweden is about to legalize same sex marriage.

A bill was introduced in parliament this week, which would give gays and lesbians the same legal rights regarding marriage as heterosexuals.

3 of the 4 parties in the coalition government are in favor of the bill, so it is pretty much guaranteed to pass.

Marriage Equality Marches On!

I was at the Lone Star last night, and I saw this poster promoting a weekend event up in Guerneville.

My initial reaction was "Oh what a pretty rose." And May is a great time in Guerneville, so I thought I would check it out.

Then I saw the url for the sponsors. And upon closer inspection I realized there was a fist holding the rose. And upon further reflection I realized the rosebud symbolizes, well, rosebud!

I won't be spending that weekend anywhere near Guerneville, thank you.

But, if you want a giggle, go to the website. I loved the part about the "hotel requests that guests refrain from using Crisco in their rooms."

Everyone's picking on Joe Biden because of his recent gaffes. I say leave the guy alone. I'll take a congenial drunk Irish guy anytime over Darth Vader. At least Biden has never shot anyone in the face, condoned torture, and ran a shadow government that did God knows what.

Update on Gay For Pay show.....

OK, so I got home last night and fired up the DVR.

I am writing because of the recent article in The Democrat. Homosexuality is not a disease. It all starts with a thought and then the thought leads to an action. I happen to have a relative who was previously in a homosexual relationship. Our family prayed for the person, accepted the person but not the lifestyle that the person chose to live. There is a vast difference. The person came out of homosexuality and is now living a fruitful heterosexual lifestyle. Homosexuals can control their lust, just like everyone else. They claim to be the only people in the world who don't have self-control, but it's a lie. Stop believing the lie. Stand up for yourself, your marriages, your children and future generations. Marriage Equality is on the table for the State of Maine.....

Don't call it "Maine." It's "the State of Maine" thank you.

State Senator Dennis Damon is introducing a bill in the legislature which would re-write the state's statute on marriage to include same-sex couples. His bill would also recognize marriages performed in other states.

Next door, in New Hampshire, a bill has been introduced to replace the term "civil union" with "marriage" in that state's civil union law.

There's no doubt both these bills will be fought tooth and nail. The Crapolic Church, among others are lining up for the fight. Both are probably a long shot.

But look how far we've come. It wasn't that long ago that Vermont's Civil Union law was considered "radical." Now, most straight people support some kind of legal recognition for same-sex couples.

It's only a matter of time before same-sex marriage becomes the law of the land. Maybe 10 or 20 years, but it will happen. And the haters know that. They can bark and growl all they want, but they KNOW that gay marriage will be a reality someday.

I look forward to that day. And also to the day when the homophobic haters will be shamed into the closet just like racists are today.

It would not have surprised me at all if some contrived "national emergency" allowed Bush to pull out one of those secret executive orders which would suspend the Constitution during a time of national crisis. He didn't assuage my fears with his comments about how dictatorship is great as long as he's the dictator.

Thankfully, my fears were unfounded. Our long history of peaceful transfer of government continues unabated. Former President Bush (God, that feels good to say) handed over the government with grace and dignity.

It feels pretty good to feel pride in my country once again.

As I look back on the last 30 years, all I can see is a laundry list of oversight failures. The current economic crisis is a direct result of letting the fox guard the henhouse, which is typical repuglican bullshit.

If you haven't just arrived from Mars, you've heard the news. The Bay Area has been under siege by protesters since January 1.

22 year old Oscar Grant was fatally shot on New Year's Eve by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle. Grant and a group of other men were involved in some sort of altercation on the train. The men were taken off the train at the Fruitvale station. Grant was handcuffed and lying face down on the platform when 27 year old Mehserle shot him.

BART has not handled this well. They initially tried to downplay the incident. They never interviewed Mehserle, and he has resigned from the force, which means BART doesn't have the authority to question him about the incident. They have taken their time investigating the incident, and not been terribly forthcoming while the investigation was ongoing.

In the meantime, protests have been breaking out on an almost daily basis, in both Oakland and San Francisco. Last week, one protest turned into a full-blown riot in downtown Oakland. Store windows were smashed, cars were burned.

The protesters portray Grant as someone just a little less holy than St Francis, despite his checkered rap sheet. Mehserle is nothing less than the devil incarnate. Accusations of racially-motivated murder are being thrown around quite frequently.

I believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I find it very unlikely that Mehserle would have maliciously, and with pre-meditation, killed Grant, in the full view of his fellow officers, a platform full of onlookers, not to mention God knows how many cell phones.

At the same time, I get the fact that, as a white male, my life experience with the police is completely different from many people of color. Those of color certainly have a long history of reasons to distrust the police.

Hopefully, the truth will out before this thing turns into, as one commentator said, "another Rodney King incident."

In the final scheduled press conference of his administration, Bush completely ignored Helen Thomas, the grande dame of the Washington press corps, despite the fact that she was in the front row waving for a question. I'm sure the snub had nothing to do with the fact that she is one of the few journalists in Washington who actually held Bush's feet to the fire, instead of kissing his ass all the time.

Thomas is only one of the most respected journalists in the world. She has covered every president since Kennedy. If the other wimps in the White House press room had one quarter of her balls, most of the shit that happened the last 8 years may not have happened at all.
