All this week I've been getting missed calls from a business called Telefund in Austin, Texas. They always called when I wasn't near the phone, and never left a message, so I didn't know what the hell they wanted. Finally, today, they called when I was near the phone. The gentleman said he was calling from the DNC, and they were raising funds to fight the right-wing ad campaign against Obama's health plan.
He asked if I was prepared to help the DNC with a $200 donation. He sounded rather flustered when I said "absolutely not."
I explained that I will not support the Democrats until Obama quits shitting on the GLBT community. He said, "well that is an important and controversial issue but...." At that point I cut him off and said "kind of like black civil rights was an important and controversial issue as well."
I went on to say that I didn't expect marriage equality overnight, but Obama isn't even fighting the easy fights like repealing DADT (supported by the majority of Americans). And his justice department was way too strident in defending DOMA during the recent court challenge. The hateful language in that brief sounded like something out of Pat Robertson, not our "ardent advocate" in the White House.
I also reminded the guy that the last time I heard, the Democrats control the House, the Senate, and the White House, so grow a pair and get this thing passed.
He kept trying to separate the GLBT issues from the health care issue and I told him that I would not support the DNC until I see some action that is important to ME. NOT ONE DIME!
He politely thanked me for my time and previous support and hung up. I know it's an insignificant thing in the scheme of things, but it felt good.

Your response to the DNC was pretty much the same as mine was when they called me. I think it is too bad that they person on the other end isn't taking notes to pass on up the line. This is just a phone bank and they probably get paid a percentage of the pledges they get. Not one dime from me until the repeal DOMA or DADT whichever comes first.
