Today was a great day for justice and equality in America. Not only did the Iowa Supreme Court strike down the law that limits marriage to a man and a woman, the Vermont House passed the bill allowing marriage equality in that state.

The Vermont marriage equality bill is far from certain. The repuglican governor has promised to veto the bill, and it's uncertain if there are enough votes to override the veto.

And the right wing nutjobs are gearing up for a fight to overturn the Iowa Supreme Court ruling by getting a constitutional amendment on the ballot. Fortunately, the Iowa constitution is much harder to amend (as it should be) than California's. That's why the older Iowa constitution has only 50 amendments compared to over 500 for California.

An Iowa constitutional amendment requires approval of both the senate and the house for two consecutive legislative sessions before the amendment goes to the voters. The earliest such a vote could come is 2012, by which time the voters will have seen the sky hasn't fallen and the world hasn't come to an end.

So, I'll take a moment to feel good about today. Another step forward in the march toward marriage equality.
