In a unanimous decision, the Iowa Supreme Court has ruled that Iowa's law limiting marriage to a man and a woman violates the constitution.
In it's ruling, the court stated "If gay and lesbian people must submit to different treatment without an exceedingly persuasive justification, they are deprived of the benefits of the principle of equal protection upon which the rule of law is founded."
Gee, that sounds vaguely familiar. Oh yeah, that's the exact argument California's Supreme Court used last year when they ruled in favor of marriage equality.
I wonder how long it will be before the right wing nutjobs of the Mormon-Catholic coalition will try to amend their constitution. Hopefully, it's a lot harder to amend Iowa's constitution than California's.

As I understand the Iowa legislature can and will now act to overturn the courts decision. Probably just pass a law saying marriage is only between a man and a woman. Where have we heard that before. The Democrats are in the majority in the legislature. I wonder if they have balls enough to stand up to the wing nuts who will descend on Iowa.
Not an expert on Iowa constitutional law, but I doubt it would be as easy as the legislature passing a law. there would most likely be some kind of referendum for a constitutional amendment. hopefully, if and when that happens, they'll do a better job at getting the message out than California's No On 8 people did.
