In a statement to AP, Phelps said that he "engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgement. I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect of me."
My regret is that he felt the need to apologize for such a trivial matter. It's not like he committed some heinous crime. In South Carolina, possession of small amounts of mary jane is a misdemeanor punishable by a $100-$200 fine. He would have received a bigger fine for speeding.Marijuana is not a banned substance from sports. It's not a performance enhancer. There are no rules regarding its use outside of competition.
I guess he has to act contrite because this could jeopardize his endorsement deals. I have no doubt the religious nut jobs will be all over him, claiming he's not a good role model.
When he finally decides to come out of the closet, I hope he considers San Francisco as his new home. We'll take care of all his ganja needs, and others.

Michael's "Act of Contrition" was purely economical. The endorsements would have gone out of the window because the wing nuts wouldn't allow a "Doper" to be a spokesman for a product. If they only knew. I'm sorry he had to apologize. I hope Bill Maher invites him on his show then they can go out and party afterwards. Michael will just have to learn to be more careful about his use in the future. Too many cellphones with camera capability for him to be himself in public. He's still one hell of a swimmer.
