Don't you just love airline ads, like this one from Emirates promoting their new non-stop service from San Francisco to Dubai.....
They make it look so wonderful. Large, comfortable seats. Excellent service featuring wine and caviar. Of course, that's only true if you're in one of the 5 first class seats on a 500 seat airliner. For the rest of us, it's this........I used to love to travel. Especially international. But, I avoid flying like the plague these days. I only travel places where it's close enough to drive. I guess there's only so much sitting crammed in a seat with my knees poking out my eyes while the guy in front of me reclines for 18 hours that I can take.

I flew business class on way back from London and don't think I can ever fly coach again
I agree with your assessment of the cramped quarters on an airline. LIke you, I no longer travel by air. I have, however, found that travel by train is very rewarding. Problem is the distance one must commute to get to a train. Unless you live in a major metropolitan area. Even getting connections out of San Francisco, aren't excellent. I was hoping that President Obama might take on a national project for passenger rail service. I live in Kansas, and we have limited connections and must meet our trains at 3:00 AM. That said, my partner and I book sleep car service and have visited the Bay Area, as well as Chicago and New York City within the last year. I hate to drive, so that makes the train a good alternative. Just my 2 cents.
