I remember when my school was desegregated. I was in the 5th grade. I had never gone to school with a black kid before, but it didn't seem that big of a deal to me. But I remember the outrage that white people expressed just because these young black kids were sharing a classroom with me. My best friend, whom I had gone to school with all my life, was ripped out of the school by his parents and sent to the private Episcopal school in town.
I remember when we had "restricted" neighborhoods. That meant covenants were written into the deeds that did not allow a house to be sold to a black person.
It was a sorry time in American history. Fortunately, that time has passed, for black people. However, it's still perfectly acceptable to spew venom and hatred toward gays and lesbians in America, and to vote away their rights.
But WE shall overcome, someday.
