A petition is being circulated to ask the IRS to review the tax-exempt status of the Mormon church because they improperly used their influence to generate funds to influence the California vote on Prop 8.

Please take a moment to sign this petition. Over 3,000 people have already signed. Add your voice.

Here's what I said:

For hundreds of thousands of gay and lesbian Californians, the fundamental right to marry, established by the California Supreme Court, has been taken away by popular vote.

The driving force behind the move to deny us our rights was the Mormon Church (LDS). They actively solicited money from parishioners to support Proposition 8. Of the $30 million raised by the "Yes on 8" campaign, it is reported that approximately 70% came from out of state members of the Mormon Church. This money was used to spread lies about the affect of same-sex marriage on California school children. They also spread lies that churches would lose their tax exempt status for not recognizing same-sex marriage if Proposition 8 did not pass.

It's interesting to note that Proposition 8 had little support in California when it first went on the ballot. It was only after the Mormon-led advertising campaign of lies hit the airwaves that public opinion shifted. The Mormon Church directly influenced an election. I am writing to ask the IRS to review the LDS tax-exempt status. I believe they have improperly used their influence in an election.

Thank you.

I've also sent this to Reps Stark and Pelosi, and Senators Boxer and Feinstein.
