Great Heterosexual Lies.....

"From the dawn of time, marriage has always been defined as a union of one man and one woman"

Oh please, are you forgetting the concubines of Abraham, Jacob, King David, and King Solomon, among others? Concubines were not "mistresses" in the traditional sense of the word. They could best be described as "lesser wives." They may not have had the status of full wives, but these relationships were just as binding as marriage.

Even today, the "one man/one woman" scenario is the exception to the rule. The Ethnographic Atlas is a database of 1200 societies in today's world, categorized by anthropologist George Murdock. Over 1000 societies practice some sort of polygamy today. 4 practice polyandry (one woman/numerous husbands). Less than 200 societies practice monogamy as the cultural norm.
